[ JUST A HEADS UP: This is not really a full feature review! ]

To read my original post on the JUX site. CLICK HERE

Working as a (video) creative in the media industry, we tend to think, speak, share and even argue through our own unique language of pictures, sound, and of course, story.

Playing with all those elements everyday can prove both magical and crazy at times depending on the client, budget, deadline or the amount of Red Bull still left in the fridge. ;)

It’s a world where quality of expression, presentation and interpretation is in full reign!

And a place where elements and ideas are meticulously crafted into “engaging” and “immersive” user experiences. Or we at least hope they are. ;)

From my own personal experience, translating much of this process to the web has left me both frustrated and disappointed. IMHO: While experimenting with many blogging, presentation, curation and CMS platforms, it continuously feels like easily creating ideas at the quality level they deserve or their elements require, generally leads to many challenges online. Various layout or “output” restrictions and/or the inability to effortless integrate separate elements from multiple services acts as a major roadblock for much of the creativity.

Many platforms and technologies are still based upon traditional “blog-style” methodologies & layouts, relying heavily on text, links and “standard-definition” static imagery. As such, the opportunity to easily create, curate, share and experience information or story in a dynamic way currently requires a fair amount of web savviness (or at least a good friend versed in coding). This is especially true when one tries to achieve all of this on a simple interface, in a single online destination armed with a hand full of self-produced ideas and high-definition (HD) imagery. Inexpensive phones, tablets, cameras, etc. all easily produce HD results that now require a new level of matching web tools and presentation capabilities. These tools are challenging developers to build platforms that allow users to think and express themselves in a whole new way, visually and narratively. This change in user expectations steps away from the sea of normalcy of “list and link based layouts” that are comfortable and expected on many of the sites today. It presents the viewer with an alternative question to “what would you like to read?” and replaces it with “what would you like to see or experience today?”

[ BELOW: My Original Post | A JUX ARTICLE ]

That’s why I get totally stoked when I see the exciting technical or product advancements like:

HTML5, JQUERY, deck.js, popcornjs.com (hyper-video and audio-players), Voicethread.com, SlideRocket.com, Adobe EDGE/MUSE, Pinterest.com, Fiveml.com, Flipboard.com, 500px.com, 3playmedia.com etc. and now JUX!

Obviously we still have a long (long) way to go before achieving “creative and technical nirvana.” A place and time where all these killer things (above) are easily integrated with each other in one single simple user friendly interface, on one destination site of our liking.

But at least with JUX and what it fundamentally represents as a form of one’s own vision and creative expression, it’s a very cool step in the right direction.

[ BELOW: My Follow Friday Suggestions 8.26 | A JUX SLIDESHOW ]

It’s “full-frame” approach to HD media (pictures/video and soon audio) and it’s grid-style design layout, is opening the “visual awareness” door (yes I just made that up)and laying the ground work for an ever growing rich-media ecosystem. It’s helping push the boundaries/possibilities of existing platforms, challenging the idea of what is possible visually and narratively while providing a simple set of tools that cut down the ” technical clutter” and “amp up” the level of creativity.

And for that… I feel JUX deserves some serious props! So FWIW guys, nicely done!

[ BELOW: Bungie Studio’s video doc from YouTube | A JUX VIDEO POST ]

Again IMHO, it’s time to create, curate and share our “experiences” in a new digital format that is exciting and more “immersive” for those consuming our content.

We should be able to build unique HD web experiences that are more limited by our imaginations than by the tools we are given. I believe the folks at JUX are of the same mind.

Yes JUX still has a ways to go, yes, it’s is still rough around the edges (and in early “launch mode”) and of course it ‘s still in need of a few fundamental things we’ve come accustomed to elsewhere (community, tags, organization of posts/pages, search, menus, HTML embedding, comments, blah blah blah).

[ BELOW: Johnathan Iyve, SVP Apple Design | A JUX BLOCK QUOTE ]

But I say… just be a little patient. I am, ‘cause I know that with anything this new it takes time to mature to understand it’s user’s needs before stabilizing and “growing into” itself.

Also, if you’ve seen their previous site-builder program (my condolences to all involved) and the deep feature set that it offered, I think one can get a better glimpse of where I believe JUX is heading. Many of the things that may be frustrating or missing now (previously mentioned above) are easily within their existing arsenal of tools and pool of talent. So hopefully, we can expect these features in upcoming releases.

Hopefully JUX and the team will continue to welcome new and bold ideas (see shameless idea plug below) and take viewers to exciting and truly “immersive” places while also creating a “game changing” platform that gives users what they deserve and are craving (or at least I am)…

A better and truly innovative way to create, share and tell our own unique stories in HD.

Congrats again on the launch guys and best of luck. - Rock On!

_________________________________________________

Shameless “bold” suggestion(s) plug:

• Organize posts in our own order and not simply by date

• Include ability for audio commentary and music on any post. Especially pictures, slide-shows or even on a home pages (for each day). Great for curators, storytellers, artists/poets.

• Full frame and automatic playback/presentation capabilities for posts, pictures and slideshows. Think “lean back/couch mode” experience of YouTube/Vimeo but for posts.

• Yeah it would be cool to have some level of SlideRocket, Keynote or Powerpoint (ouch) abilities within JUX. I know that it’s a sexy blog but it also has the ability to be a unique platform of expression. Maybe these type of features could be included as “PRO” options. Just say’n.

• Add links to pictures (even if included in slideshows).

• While currently impressive, more control over the handling of how text and pictures are displayed throughout the site.

• The ability to have full-width columns of text/pages. While other content is stunning big, text when used correctly, can be equally awesome!

• A confirmation screen before deleting anything! I know you’re already on top of this one by now. Undelete/Restore would be cool as well.

• The ability to add (separate) featured images to posts (of all types) for display on the homepage. Like WordPress offers. That way videos that have FUGLY thumbnails don’t ruin our stellar homepage layout(s). And certain pix only can be seen once inside the post.

FCPX: A curated journey & my thoughts on Shareist!

[ HEADS UP: THIS IS NOT A REVIEW OF FCPX ]

@zbutcher: As mentioned in my last post I think Shareist is a rock’n new curation tool and website. It’s fast, simple and elegantly displays your shares/posts for viewers to visually enjoy. Coincidentally, at the time I began playing around with Shareist, Apple had announced the new version of Final Cut Pro X (FCPX).

At first, I was doing what I always do as a professional (PRO) editor faced with new toys, I was “taking the temperature”: bookmarking and saving reactions, information, videos, etc. for my own personal research. However, that plan didn’t last very long as something bigger had begun to unfold. Users started to download & explore the software immediately only to quickly discover that many features (Tape I/O, multi-cam, OMF/XML support, etc.) required for PRO application (and currently implemented in FCP7) were now non-existent in FCPX.

Even though some were excited, the release was mostly met with vehement opposition and disappointment by the existing PRO market, especially by those of us working in the broadcast television and film industries. Immediately, reactions, information and videos were hitting the net and social media networks at a feverish pace. It was then that I really dove deep into Shareist and decided to place myself in the epicenter of the curation storm and potential Apple marketing “debacle.” An hour later, my curated “mission control center“ for FCPX was up and running.

“Final Cut Pro X” [ curated by @zbutcher ]

My goals were simple: 1) “battle test” Shareist’s functionality and reliability while 2) creating a single destination of responses (positive and/or negative), pertinent FCPX information and videos so myself and others could easily find, read, retrieve, decipher and share accordingly 3) include pre-release “backstory” posts for review and lastly 4) have the site serve as an interesting point of reference a year from now once FCPX has had a chance to be updated and mature.

Shareist rose to the occasion by: a) easily fetching all vital information through it’s impressive bookmarklet b) chewing through YouTube and Vimeo embeds like candy c) quickly uploading pictures and creating screenshots when necessary to keep posts visually interesting d) conveniently placing all necessary share tools (Twitter and Facebook) without any additional help on my part and finally e) elegantly displaying everything in an easy to read dynamic layout . It was consistently solid and allowed me to focus on getting my mad FCPX curation skills on without technical distractions.

It stood tall as a perfectly focused digital newsstand for those willing to make the journey or curious enough to enter. Facebook, followers, Twitter and tweeps held strong on the social media front lines, feeding me & Shareist timely information that traditional news gathers could only dream of (unless they had a time machine). The immediacy of information via the web and social media networks combined with the powers of curation made it obviously apparent to me that users and PROs alike, no longer had to wait for news, they were the news.

Using television as an analogy, it truly felt as though the weeks events unfolded online like traditional journalistic “Breaking News” stories worthy of commercial interruption: The release, the reactions, the responses, the silence from Apple, the Pogue NY Times articles, Apple breaking it’s silence with FAQ page and, of course, the announcements of 50% off deals on competitive ADOBE and AVID products.

It truly has been a crazy two weeks for all those willing to be involved or take witness in the latest chapter of Final Cut Pro. The transition to FCPX and the circumstances surrounding it’s release will mostly likely be remembered by editors as a milestone event, for better or worse. Either way, it has still served as the perfect topic to further my experience with curation while experimenting with a great new tool like Shareist. So in that respect, everything that had happened was beneficial but as a working PRO video editor who’s been using FCP since version 1.0 and makes his living with FCP7… well, that’s entirely different story! And unfortunately, you’ll need to come back for that post a little later.

In the meantime, I appreciate all of you who have visited the site and respect those of you who’ve written posts or created videos I have curated. I hope that it has helped in some way and that it will continue to provide information to those who need it. I will do my best to continue gathering as much pertinent info as possible but recommendations are always welcomed via the SHARE AN ITEM button.

Much appreciated and Rock On my fellow editors for times are a changing and information is key!

Scoop.it also fun!

@zbutcher: Somehow I stumbled on Shareist and I have to say it’s very impressive. Honestly, I’m much better at curating than I will ever be at blogging. But that’s okay since they are two different things to a large extent. Blogging is great platform to express one’s self by writing insightful articles and sharing their point of view. Curation is… well a whole separate beast. I’m not going to write about what it is or isn’t, there are many excellent reads covering that concept already. Anyway, it turns out that I love to curate, it’s just a part of my nature. So it’s nice to see some powerful new web tools (Shareist, Scoop.it and the like) that allow me to do my thang.

Another excellent site is Scoop.it. Much like Shareist, it is simple, unobtrusive and has a bookmarklet to keep you moving as fast as possible. As I explore the various tools of curating, collecting, sharing, displaying the information effectively and allowing others to curate along with me are all key. Both sites allow you to do this, however, Shareist has an edge compared to other tools. It has a beautiful 3 column layout for elegantly displaying your shares. For me this was the standout feature that separated it from other curating options. Shareist is currently in private beta but I was fortunate to be one of the lucky ones to receive an invitation. The timing couldn’t have been better… ‘cause as fate would have it, Apple recently released a new version of it’s professional editing software Final Cut Pro X (FCPX) right as I was playing around with Shareist and all hell broke loose (more on that in another post). Suddenly I was curating as much as I could as fast as I could to help others get to information quickly and in one place. That being said it was a great “real world” use case to “battle test” the platform. And all in all, it completely rocked! So just wanted to share this and invite you to have a look at my Shareist FCPX site and if you like what you see maybe request an invite as well. Also, you may want to consider Scoop.it if that better suits your needs. Here’s an example of my online video providers (OVPs) topic there to check out. If you enjoy curating like I do I don’t think that you’ll be disappointed by either of these great services.

Final Cut Pro X - [ Launch ] Quick Summary - Day1

The LiveShare application allows you to create an event and share photo streams related to that event. Anyone you invite to join the event can view the photos instantly as well as contribute their own photos. The app is currently available for the iPhone and iPad as well as any web browser that supports HTML5, but the company has plans to expand to other devices in the future.

“It’s a cross device, user-centric experience,” says Shoemaker. “When you jump into LiveShare, you can do that from your phone, from your tablet or from your web browser, and it’s the same experience with the same information and media. However you come in, you’ve got your personal world right there. If you’re on your phone, you’re more likely to capture photos and videos, so you could just take pictures and take videos, and those are instantly synced to the cloud. So you go back home, and those photos and videos are available for you to browse, present, and share to groups or social networks. We think this is going to be a great way to really connect all the different parts of your life.”

Images and video are just the beginning for LiveShare. “In the first version, we’re only going to support image and video attachments,” explains Shoemaker. “In the future, we’re going to allow any kind of documents. The idea is if you’re sharing say a Photoshop file of a mockup, you should be able to drag and drop that on your group and they should be able to open it on the other side.”

You can also share text messages, videos and links from your browser. Links can be viewed right in the app using a minibrowser, or you can jump out to your full browser. And as location is a big part of the context of any event, the app allows you to geotag all of your messages.

Can’t happen soon enough IMHO. Not sure of the cost but the concept alone is enough to want make hard core web surfers (like myself) start save up immediately!

At the Cable Show in Chicago today, Comcast’s CEO Brian Roberts showcased the company’s ability to deliver 1 gigabit per second throughput by downloading a full season of 23 episodes of 30 Rock in just 1 minute, 39 seconds. Putting the 1 Gbps throughput in context, Roberts noted that back in 1996, delivering 1-2 megabits per second was state of the art, and that as recently as 2007, 100 megabits per second was the limit.

Increasing speed has been a core value proposition of cable’s broadband ISP efforts for years. It has taken on even greater importance recently as consumption of high-quality video has soared. An emerging theme in the pay-TV industry is delivering not just on-demand streams, but full lineups of live TV over IP as well. All of this will drive ever-higher consumer needs for bandwidth.

A few great excerpts from David’s post include:

“TV is a crazy, weed-filled, wonderful, out-of-control garden.” It is time to rethink TV. It is time to imagine what it could be and redefine it for the participatory culture of tomorrow.

Twitter has also made itself a mainstay in the newsroom, often being the first to break news stories with over 77% of TV newsrooms now use twitter. In fact, many news channels use the videos and images shared by viewers on Twitter to add meaning to their reports. Indeed the integration of social media into the newsroom has taken a step further with the launch of Al Jazeera’s social media cantered program ‘the stream’ which is probably the most ambitious integration of Twitter into a news program to date.

Every TV network will have a social media Team -Every launch will have a dedicated social media plan. Two years ago, there was nothing. Today, social is a core component of how the US networks do their job. This will spread globally across broadcast media.

Social TV is important because social media will bring together the TV and the digital world. People already use their TV’s socially: they either watch it together as a family, or watch a show separately but talk about them together at a later time. So Social TV is about bringing real-time interactivity back to TV, which has been lacking in recent years. The people who used to sit in front of a television and talk about their experiences to friends, family and co-workers are now empowered to do so right here, right now. Perhaps more important however, people are building full-fledged networks around them, creating a distribution channel of audiences with audiences and their reach is as influential as it is infinite.

Last week, Megan Garber wrote an excellent piece on whether Twitter is speech or text. Yet despite a number of insightful and timely points, I’d argue there is a fundamental flaw with the very dichotomy of the question. While Twitter can certainly be both, it’s inherently neither. And trying to classify it within one or both of these conventional checkboxes completely misses the point that we might, in fact, have to invent an entirely new checkbox.Twitter as discovery

Like any appropriated buzzword, the term “curation” has become nearly vacant of meaning. But, until we come up with a better one, it remains the semantic placeholder that best captures the central paradigm of Twitter as a conduit of discovery and direction for what is meaningful, interesting and relevant in the world. Just as its origin in the art world, curation online is premised on the idea that a curator with a point of view culls content around a theme that he or she deems of cultural significance. A museum can make a name for itself by being consistently reliable in hosting these conversations (take the MoMA); likewise, a curator can make a name for herself by being consistently compelling in catalyzing those conversations (take Paola Antonelli). But the museum is merely the enabler of that conversation, the curator merely its catalyst, and the cultural conversation itself takes place largely outside the walls of the museum and the control of the curator. [ more ]

If the iPad app delivers many will be happy.

via engadget.com

In an early preview of TiVo’s plans for The Cable Show this week in Chicago, TMCNet has posted information on two new set-top boxes that will be offered by cable operators RCN and Suddenlink. As suggested by recent surveys and forum posts, the Premiere Q is a quad-tuner DVR with multiroom streaming of up to three HD feeds via MoCA or Ethernet, while the Preview is TiVo’s first box without a hard drive and serves as a client to the main box.

Another revelation is news that an updated version of TiVo’s iPad app will include be able to browse cable VOD, allowing users to select it on the tablet and then “flick” it to their box where it starts playing.

If the information holds up the new hardware seems competitive and modern enough, but we’re wondering if TiVo will continue to serve end users who prefer to buy equipment instead of lease and are waiting for things like the new DirecTiVo or software updates that enhance performance on the Premiere and finish off its HD menu system. [ more ]

Just hope Google can work it out soon or we’ll all be forced to move to Sebastopol, CA.

via buzzmachine.com

Time Warner is testing throttled — severely throttled — tiered pricing for internet access, putting it at odds with its customers, with the media industry, and with the future of the internet. I’d like to discuss how they could think differently about their business and customers. What if, instead of a gatekeeper, they saw themselves as platforms or technology innovators or catalysts or enablers?

The AP reports (via PaidContent) that TW will charge subscribers in Beaumont, Texas, will be charged $29.95 a month for slow service at 768 kilobits per second and a 5-gigabyte monthly cap up to $54.90 per month for 15 megabits per second and a 40-gigabyte cap; going over will cost them $1 per gig. For scale, the AP points out, a standard def movie is about 1.5 gigabytes and a high-definition movie is 6 to 8 gigs.

So Time Warner could end up charging customers more for watching a movie than the service selling the movie, whether that is iTunes or Netflix. I’m sure that’s quite on purpose. It is TW’s FU to the net neutrality debate: If we can’t gouge both ends of the pipe, we’ll doubly gouge the one that is stuck with us. [ more ]

That’s why it’s so refreshing to hear about Sonic.net, the ISP that is offering 1 Gbps fiber connections direct to the home for $70 a month. Incredibly, that price includes the installation of a fiber line direct to the user’s home.

Now, $70 a month for internet may seem prohibitively expensive. But, let’s put that in context. Other ISPs normally charge around $100 for 100 Mbps connections; even Sonic.net used to offer 40 Mbps for the same price as their new 1 Gbps. In their report, Ars Technica points out that for twice as much money as a 1.5 Mbps connection with Comcast, users would receive speeds around 600 times faster with Sonic.net. That seems like a fairly worthy investment.

Unfortunately, Sonic.net’s crazy fast speeds are only available as a pilot program that includes some 700 homes in Sebastopol, CA.
[ more ]

New 'As Seen On' Pages Curate The Videos You Embed

@zbutcher: Curating content is hot & a lot of work (trust me)!
